Murray Christmas Everyone!
The Candy Shop wishes you a very Merry (Murray) Christmas!
And so it’s fast approaching: as I sit at my desk, looking out the windows to the light dusting of snow on the driveway, we can feel that familiar Christmas excitement building.
Even though the days of spending Christmas eve glued to the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of Father Christmas and his fleet of reindeer shooting through the sky on their annual rounds, are long gone, sometimes I still hear the distant ring of the Coca Cola truck in the background. Thinking back to the Toys-R-Us advert in the eighties still gives me goosebumps too!
There’s just so many things to look forward to during this season and the character of Frank Cross sums up some of that ‘festive spirit’ in the classic film Scrooged: "It's Christmas Eve. It's the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we smile a little easier, we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be.”
If you know the film then you’ll know the moment well and you probably have a similar tendency to pair Christmas with the force that is Bill Murray.
Or maybe it’s just me.
I just can’t help it - some of the best and most well known Christmas films to come out of the eighties has had good old Bill with his deadpan demeanour and natural sour grapes Christmasitised out of him!
The obvious film choice to go to is, of course, Scrooged (1988) in which we see Bill flourish as mean and cynical Frank in a modern day dark retelling of the Charles Dickens classic novel - A Christmas Tale.
Murray was so convincing as Frank in Scrooged, that a few years later he was cast to portray arrogant celebrity weatherman Phil in Ground hog day. This 1993 film was uncannily similar as Phil Connor was also made to face life lessons, not through the Christmas trilogy of past, present and future like Frank, but instead by living the same day over and over until he learnt the error of his ways.
Lastly for epic Christmas Murray movies is, of course, the Ghostbusters saga! This film really needs no introduction. Again, Murray filled the slot of the wisecracking cynic but this time under the guise of a parapsychologist based in the city of New York. Luckily Peter Venkman manages to set up business with the rest of his crew just in time to save the Big Apple and indeed World from destruction!
Whilst not necessarily a Christmas film, it seems to come around during the most wintery weeks and it’s a cracking film to get the friends and family nice and cosy around the TV box to.
This year I can’t wait for those moments… feeling full after an endless supply of Quality Street, Monopoly pieces are strewn about the place, glitter and lights in every corner and a glass of Dissaranno by my side.
Even if there is no Murray in sight, I know that our ladies get that magical feeling when meeting with our charming clientele which is why we are open throughout the Christmas season with the exception of a few days where when we close up the Candy Shop so that we all can still get our sugar fix!
